Honoring Black Artists at Piece by Piece for Black History Month

Black History Month is a time to celebrate the contributions of Black artists to art, culture, and society. At Piece by Piece, we are proud to highlight the resilience, beauty, and innovation of our Black artists, whose mosaics tell powerful stories of perseverance and heritage.

Mosaic art transforms small, broken pieces into breathtaking compositions—mirroring the resilience and creativity of the Black community. Our artists use this medium to express their identities, emotions, and histories, reclaiming narratives and inspiring future generations.

The legacy of Black artists like Jacob Lawrence, Faith Ringgold, and Romare Bearden continues to influence our work. Their storytelling through color and movement echoes in the mosaics our artists create today, as they leave their mark on the mosaic art world.

Our talented Black artists come from diverse backgrounds, each bringing unique stories and experiences that fuel their creativity. They have overcome challenges, using mosaics as a tool for healing and empowerment. Their dedication to the craft and community shines through in every piece they create—whether commissioned, personal, or collaborative.

Jeanette M.

Jeanette grew up in Pasadena and now calls Los Angeles home. She has been with Piece by Piece since its inception, stepping out of her comfort zone to embrace art and community. Her journey with mosaics has transformed her into a confident artist who continually pushes herself to learn and grow. Jeanette credits Piece by Piece with keeping her engaged, inspired, and constantly evolving in her artistic journey.

June C.

June, a Los Angeles native, found solace and healing through art after facing significant hardships, including surviving domestic violence and homelessness while battling breast cancer. Since joining Piece by Piece in 2015, she has honed her craft, received commissions, and used mosaics to tell powerful stories. Her artistic expression is deeply rooted in resilience, strength, and the transformative power of creativity.

Sidney T.

Originally from Florida, Sidney now resides in Inglewood, CA. He joined Piece by Piece in 2022, discovering a newfound passion for mosaics. With a background in art advocacy, Sidney sees mosaics as an exciting and meaningful medium for self-expression. He takes pride in his artistic growth, his collaborations with fellow artists, and selling his first mosaic piece.

John M.

John, a dedicated mosaic artist at Piece by Piece, brings a unique perspective to his work, embracing creativity as both a personal and communal experience. His ability to experiment with different mosaic techniques and designs has made him a dynamic contributor to the Piece by Piece community. John values the connections he has made through art and appreciates the opportunity to share his passion with others.

Instructor Bea Jones: A Guiding Light in Mosaic Art

One of the pillars of our community is Instructor Bea, whose decades of experience as both an artist and mental health professional make her an invaluable mentor. Through her work at Piece by Piece, she blends artistic instruction with compassionate guidance, helping artists develop confidence, skills, and a sense of purpose. Her commitment to uplifting others is a testament to the power of art as a force for positive change.

This Black History Month, we honor our Black artists not just for their talent, but for their dedication to building a stronger, more inclusive artistic community. Their work serves as a reminder that art is more than just decoration—it is a vehicle for change, a voice for the unheard, and a celebration of cultural identity.

We invite you to explore and support the incredible work of our Black artists at Piece by Piece. Their mosaics tell powerful stories, reminding us all that creativity knows no bounds and that every piece—just like every person—has a place in the bigger picture.
