Mixed Media Robots
In May, artist instructor Julie Williams returned to teach a workshop using mixed media. The focus was on recycled materials including a variety of metal pieces to make mosaic robots. In addition to sparking creativity, this class also focused on proper adhesives to use for different materials. Metal can be a challenge in mosaic, but knowing how to incorporate it into a design can be a wonderful way to add curiosity and interest to a piece.
As with most art adventures, a piece starts with imagination and inspiration. We value the planning and playing process by encouraging artists to sketch, draw, scribble their ideas before putting a piece on their artwork. In this workshop series, Julie first asked participants to imagine what their robot would be doing, what environment they would be in. Everyone sketched an image and then transferred their ideas to their board.

We also like to inspire artists by seeing common, everyday items in a new way. In this workshop, for example, a mint tin becomes the body of a robot, and a bike chain can be arms linked between two robot friends. The mundane becomes exciting and the dull is brightened.

With a mix of glass, ceramic, and metal, these mechanical visions came to life, and everyone enjoyed the process of experimentation and creativity.
