June Workshops Focus on Installation Techniques
In June, artist instructor Tracey Corinne taught a series of workshops focusing on installation techniques. Practicing these different methods builds skills that help artists make decisions on their future projects both in design and practicality.
Although the most common way to apply a mosaic is gluing pieces directly to a substrate, sometimes the situation requires a different approach. For example, for a large mosaic mural, instead of standing at the wall for hours upon hours, one can use fiberglass mesh or tile tape to assemble the pieces in the studio and then install the sections to the wall. These technique are frequently used at Piece by Piece for our large-scale projects.
In our colorful applique project for an outdoor space of a luxury apartment building in Long Beach, the artist team used fiberglass mesh to put each section together and made the installation easier.
In a recent project for the city of Paramount, artists and members of the community created mosaic flowers using tile tape, making it easier for more people to join in the creation of this sculptural commission. Each flower was then applied to the sculpture into a beautiful garden.
For this installation techniques class, participant artists practiced three different styles of installation to make a single artwork. Within their design, they used both tile tape and fiberglass mesh for individual design elements and used the direct method to apply the background.
These types of technically-focused workshops are also helpful for building skills toward level three of Piece by Piece’s certification program, which provides opportunities for participants to earn income.
