Visiting Artist Series: Kelley Knickerbocker

Seattle Mosaic Artist Kelley Knickerbocker visited Piece by Piece in November to teach a special workshop that inspired both creativity and technical skills. With a challenge to use only one material to make an entire piece, participant artists rose to the occasion and had a great time finding new ways to see a single material.

Work from participant artists Kim, Jose, and Andrea.

Kelley encouraged everyone to see a piece of tesserae from various perspectives: flat, on its side, chipped, angled, split…the options are many and the results were as fun as they were unique. “I loved the class,” said one artist. “It was fun to think differently.” While some artists chose to use glass, others tried their hand at exploring ceramics.

This workshop was an excellent exercise in pushing creative boundaries and trying new techniques. We are grateful to learn from Kelley’s innovative approach to mosaic, and truly appreciate her encouragement and support for a very packed house of enthusiastic Piece by Piece artists.
