Wendy & Eric's Fire Memories Mosaic Project
In the aftermath of devastation, art has the power to preserve memories and bring healing. At Piece by Piece, we transform loss into beauty, creating mosaics infused with history, resilience, and personal significance.
Recently, Wendy Marantz Levine and Eric Levine, survivors of the Palisades Fire, embarked on a powerful journey of transformation with Piece by Piece. Through our Fire Memories Mosaic Project, they turned recovered items from the fire into a one-of-a-kind mosaic—a tribute to their past, their survival, and their new beginnings.
As seen in the video, Wendy and Eric’s journey started with charred fragments and belongings salvaged from the fire—pieces that held sentimental value despite their damage. With guidance from Piece by Piece artists and founder Sophie Alpert, these pieces were carefully integrated into a stunning mosaic, ensuring that what remained wasn’t just a reminder of loss, but a symbol of resilience.
The video captures moments of reflection and creation, showing how Wendy and Eric worked alongside our artists to incorporate their personal story into the artwork. Every broken tile, every carefully placed shard, carried meaning—representing strength, renewal, and the beauty that emerges from adversity.
Wendy is the co-founder of the Beauty Bus, an organization dedicated to bringing dignity and connection through beauty services to those facing chronic illness. A former attorney with a passion for justice and service, Wendy has spent her career helping others rebuild and find strength in adversity—values she now brings to this powerful mosaic project.
This project is about more than just creating art; it’s about community, healing, and empowerment. At Piece by Piece, we offer free mosaic workshops to individuals in Los Angeles who have experienced homelessness, economic hardship, trauma, or loss, as well as veterans and their families. Many of our skilled artisans have transformed their own lives through art, and they now help others do the same.
The video highlights the passion and expertise of these artists, showing how mentorship and creativity intertwine to foster healing. As Sophie Alpert shares, art becomes a powerful tool for recovery, helping individuals process emotions, regain confidence, and build a tangible connection to their past and future.
The Fire Memories Mosaic Project is an invitation to preserve your own story through art. If you or someone you know has experienced loss and wants to transform recovered fragments into a meaningful mosaic, we’re here to help.
