Renae B.
Mosaic Artist
Where are you from?
I am from Las Vegas, NM.
Tell us about your family.
I come from a single family home with a wonderfully talented background of singers artists and musicians. My grandfather was a mariachi guitar player in the 60s and 70s . My mother a dancer and Spanish singer. My brother is a professional cellist in the Scottsdale Philharmonic. Although we are a super multi talented family we have struggled with financial differences like any other low income family. We have overcome a lot of hardships and continue to keep shining like a rainbow through the dark storms.
Tell us about past work/school or other meaningful experiences.
I loved school — I was always in art classes an did painting, acting, and choir as well as receiving a scholarship in ceramics.
What is something you are proud of?
I’m proud of continuing my art which has healed me more than anything in life. Keeps it fun and looking forward to accomplishing something.
How did you first hear about Piece by Piece?
I found out about the program at the law library dealing with an eviction and met all the wonderful talented ladies.
How have you grown as a person and artist since joining Piece by Piece?
Yes, tremendously. I’ve been more open to trying new things which has made me more skilled throughout the years, and now I am certified in glass cutting.
When did you start creating mosaics?
In 12th grade senior year with glass infusion and ceramics.
What has Piece by Piece and creating mosaics added to your life?
It has added so much color and created friendships in a new artistic family I love.
Who inspires you?
All of my classmates and teachers, I love them all so much.
What project have you enjoyed most? And why?
My bullet frame, because I had a hot topic belt and saved the left overs for a creation in the future. 15 years later I finally used it. Plus it’s pretty and I tried precisely cutting my pieces to perfection and most times I prefer broken bits that don’t match.
What are you most proud of from your Piece by Piece time so far?
I’m proud of finally getting that W2 so I can make money after 4 years being here.
What keeps you coming back to Piece by Piece?
Having fun and learning every time.
