Little Pieces Mosaic workshop for youth!

Spring Break is here! The perfect opportunity for your child to spend some free time getting creative and learning a new skill! Join Piece by Piece for our upcoming mosaic workshop at the Vermont Square Branch Library on April 5, 2023, at 3 PM. Any school-aged youth is welcome to join in on the fun. This class is supported by a grant from The Water Buffalo Club.

Mosaic art is a form of creative expression that involves arranging small pieces of colored glass, ceramic, and other materials into a design or pattern. In this workshop, Dawn Mendelson, Piece by Pieces Artistic Director, will teach your child all the basics of creating their very own mosaic work of art. They will also have the freedom to create whatever design or pattern they like, using a wide range of colors and textures to create a truly special and personalized piece.

A few basic materials are needed when creating mosaics. These can include tiles or other materials to use as mosaic pieces, an adhesive such as tile glue, and a surface to mosaic on, such as a wooden shape or picture frame. At our Little Pieces workshop, your child will receive all the materials they need to create their special piece. Prior to the workshop, the Piece by Piece team will use a tool called tile nippers to shape the mosaic pieces your child will be using. Finally, your child’s finalized pieces will be taken back to the Piece by Piece studio and finished with a grout sealant. Their beautiful piece will be ready to pick up just a few days later!

Making mosaic art can be a meditative and relaxing experience. The repetitive nature of arranging small pieces into a larger pattern can help to calm the mind and reduce stress. The process of creating something beautiful with your hands can also be deeply rewarding and fulfilling, providing a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Piece by Piece experiences this with our participants on a weekly basis, and we are excited to share it with the folks at the VermontSquare Branch Library. We hope you come and join us for a few hours of artistic exploration and self-expression – we can't wait to see what your child creates!

    Visiting Artist Series: Kelley Knickerbocker

Seattle Mosaic Artist Kelley Knickerbocker visited Piece by Piece in November to teach a special workshop that inspired both creativity and technical skills. With a challenge to use only one material to make an entire piece, participant artists rose to the occasion and had a great time finding new ways to see a single material.
